The 2nd edition of the Young Architects Program – YAP in Santiago will open to the public on December 17, where the winner of the architectural installation competition will be exhibited. Every Saturday until January 28, 2012, there will be daytime musical and audiovisual events with renowned DJs to bring together a diverse audience. In its first edition, YAP_Constructo received over 4000 visitors.
The event will take place in the central courtyard of Matucana 100 where the GUN office, composed by the winning architects Jorge Godoy and Lene Nettelbeck, had the opportunity to build their project called Water Cathedral Project. The concept behind the work is a large cave, in the manner of a Gothic cathedral, long and horizontal; a place of free public (urban) access. The exhibition will consist of stalactites of different height and concentration. The project incorporates water dripping in different pulses and speeds through these hanging elements. The stalactites will also provide shade to the visitors. In the meantime, stalagmites make up the furniture that fills this collective space.
Santiago is one of the three cities that participate in this program in conjunction with the MAXXI in Rome and the MoMA in New York. YAP seeks to create an urban setting that is friendly to the environment. It aims to empower young architects and find creative solutions to intervene a urban space.
